Do I Look Afghan

My housemate, Roya, came back to Kabul yesterday, after over a month away visiting her family. Today, she’s flown to Herat for a week, to do a story for a radio station.

As she was leaving the house to go to the airport this morning, she asked me “Do i look Afghan?”

She is Afghan, but she lived in Germany and America from when she was one year old. And her clothes didn’t really make her look like an average Afghan woman.

“You look like an Afghan American”, i said. “but you’d only need one extra item of clothing and you’d look really Afghan.”

“What’s that?” she asked.

“A burkha!”
