Flying Off Again

It seems to have been a while since i wrote a proper blog post!

I’ve been in Darwin since last Saturday morning and it’s been nice to spend a last few days here, enjoying the hot steamy weather, before i fly off to winter in England. I fly out tonight at just before one o’clock.

I think it’s about a four hour flight to Singapore, and then i’ve got to hang around in the airport there for six hours. It will be too early in the morning to make it worthwhile trying to go into the city, so i guess i’ll be spending a bit of time in the cactus garden, on the roof of terminal one – getting a break from the aircon before the next leg of the journey. … Read more »

Good Riddance to John Howard!

Well, it’s hard to believe, but finally the destructive force of the Howard government has come to an end!

And it’s poetic justice that, as well as being Australia’s second longest serving prime minister, Howard’s also the second one to lose his seat while still in power. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person! Now he can crawl back under whatever rock it was that he came out from in the first place.

The only disappointment was that that smug and petulant shoolboy, the aptly name Downer, managed to keep his seat. But maybe it will be worth it to see a bit of the smugness knocked off his face from now on! … Read more »

Voting In The Australian Federal Election

I voted today – for the first time ever in Australia. I’ve only been here 22 years, so i guess that’s reasonable!

I voted in England once, too. It was the first election after i turned 18 and i wanted to see what all the fuss was about. But it wasn’t very exciting, so i never did it again!

Anyway, i’m enrolled in a marginal electorate and it’s just possible my vote could actually count. I hope it does, because i’m sick of watching that bastard Howard on his rampage of cultural destruction in this country. Since this lot have been in power, they’ve done a very good job of destroying all the good things about Australian culture. What they’ve left in its place is an ugly, selfish, and greedy imitation of the US. … Read more »

1995 Travel Blog

From February 1995 to February 1996, i spent a year travelling round the world. I went from Australia to Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, England, Scotland, Spain, India, and Laos. A lot of the travelling was on buses, trains and ferries.

And while i travelled, i wrote about the journey – in the form of a travel book. I’ve had a couple of goes to get it published since then, but never really had the drive to do the vast amount of work required to find a publisher. If there’d been blogs in those days, i would have written it as a blog, but there weren’t, so i didn’t – although a lot of it was written directly onto my laptop. … Read more »

Arboriculture Certificate Assessment

Well, i did finally manage to get out of Brisbane on Wednesday. But with all the procrastinating and the hour time difference between Queensland and New South Wales at this time of year, i didn’t get to Byron Bay till about five o’clock.

The first thing i did was go to Suffolk Park, walk on the beach, do a bit of sunbathing, and have a swim. The sunbathing wasn’t all it could have been, as the sun was low and the shadows were creeping down the dunes. But it was great to finally make it to the beach – and really good to get into the water again. With no crocodiles! :-) … Read more »
