Working For The Council

My contract says i’m not allowed to tell anyone anything about my work – which, i guess, may even mean i’m not allowed to tell anyone that i’m not allowed to tell them!

Anyway, i seem to have come to the end of my first week as Housing Manger for Maningrida council. I’m not sure i’ve actually done any managing yet, but on Monday i started the week by taking down the whiteboard that completely covered the window in my office – so now i can look out at the real world.

And of course everyone else can look in. The window looks out onto a roofed concrete area that’s between the council offices and the credit union, post office and dole office, and a takeaway place, so there’s always lots of people out there. And lots of dogs. But i don’t mind providing a bit of entertainment for people – i’d rather have them sitting in the office with me, looking over my shoulder, than not be able to see out!

I can’t quite see the Arafura Sea (or, really, the mouth of the Liverpool River) from my desk – but if i stand outside the office door i can see it. It’s beautiful here. I’ll take a few photos soon…

The other thing i’ve managed to do this week is sign up for a dialup internet connection. Dialup!!! Strewth, i thought i’d seen the last of that horror! But no. Until our wonderful federal government’s great plan for broadband for the bush kicks off – another part of their election campaign – i’m stuck with the modern equivalent of a wind-up gramophone (remember them?)!

Actually, dialup’s slower than wind-up gramophones were – at least they operated at 78 rpm. I think dialup operates at about 2 rpm!
