Voting In The Australian Federal Election

I voted today – for the first time ever in Australia. I’ve only been here 22 years, so i guess that’s reasonable!

I voted in England once, too. It was the first election after i turned 18 and i wanted to see what all the fuss was about. But it wasn’t very exciting, so i never did it again!

Anyway, i’m enrolled in a marginal electorate and it’s just possible my vote could actually count. I hope it does, because i’m sick of watching that bastard Howard on his rampage of cultural destruction in this country. Since this lot have been in power, they’ve done a very good job of destroying all the good things about Australian culture. What they’ve left in its place is an ugly, selfish, and greedy imitation of the US.

When i first came here, 22 years ago, there was a lot that i liked about Australian culture – a lot that made it stand out among the cultures of the other countries i’d spend time in. The mainstay of Australian culture, back then, was that concept of fairness. It was ok to get rich – but not to walk all over everyone else to do it. Now, walking all over everyone else is admired and rewarded with incredible wealth. In the time i’ve been in this country, i reckon the real value of wages for ordinary people has halved.

There’s only one good thing these bastards have done in the eleven years they’ve been in government – and that’s to finally slay the zombie of the white Australia policy. The policy was officially dead, but it just wouldn’t lie down. Before this lot started their reign, the official white Australia policy had gone, only to be replaced by the unofficial white Australia policy. It was still very difficult to get into this country if you were black. Well, Howard’s changed that, i’m pleased to say. non-white immigration to this country has increased dramatically under them.

But apart from that, they’ve done nothing but destroy.

I don’t think Rudd will be much better in some ways, but Labor still has a commitment to the concept of “a fair go” – even if they’re only paying it lip service. That’s better than nothing.

Anyway, we’ll see i guess…
