European Union

There’s been a bit of a mini crisis in Europe this week, as a referendum in Ireland rejected a new treaty between the EU member countries.

Naturally – in the way of all things that have ever been done by bureaucrats – the treaty that created the EU in the first place was a bit of a bodge-up and it doesn’t allow the European Union to progress from the point it’s at at the moment. Among other things, the current treaty limits the number of member countries to 27 – which has already been reached. That means countries like Croatia, which is hoping to become a member by 2011, wouldn’t be able to join. … Read more »

On Friday i went to Southend, to meet up with a couple of old friends from Australia who’ve both been living in London for a few years now. Quite why anyone who could live in Australia would choose to live in London, i’m damned if i know – but there’s no accounting for taste!

Anyway, Phil and Brenton were going to Southend on Phil’s motorbike so Brenton could buy a bike there himself. I managed to have a decent swim four days in a row, from Sunday to Wednesday. Wednesday was borderline and if it had been any colder i wouldn’t have gone in. But yesterday it was cold and rainy, so i didn’t even think about swimming. High tide’s getting a bit late now, anyway – it was about half past eight yesterday evening. Although an hour and a half before high tide’s ok, if you don’t mind wading through a little bit of mud to get to the water – which is what i did on Wednesday! … Read more »

I did intend to write another blog the day after i wrote the last one, but i never got round to it. Or, rather, i didn’t get round to it till now. Here it is…

I went to London on Thursday last week, and met up with Sanjar and Sonia – a couple of friends from Kabul. Sanjar’s Afghan and Sonia’s Russian and they got married in Kabul last year. They’ve been living in Glasgow since late last year as Sanjar got a scholarship to study there. I hadn’t seen them since i left Kabul – which is over a year ago now. It was great to be able catch up with them again. … Read more »
