I’ve recently finished reading “An Average War”, by Mike Peyton. It’s the story of his life in the British army during the second world war.

War stories aren’t even close to the type of genre i normally read, but Mike’s the father of a couple of very old friends of mine and he was kind enough to give me a copy of his book. And i’m glad he did, as i really enjoyed reading it. It’s well written, in a very casual sort of way, and the story of his wartime adventures is gripping. … Read more »

I saw John Lydon on the One Show on television last night. I came in half way through, so i’m not sure what he was ranting about, but it’s nice to see he hasn’t changed much in 30 years. He was a grumpy young man when i met him in 77 or 78 and it looks like he’s a grumpy old man now. … Read more »

Tillingham Flower Show

I had a good day yesterday, although it was hard work and i’m aching slightly from it today. We ran a hog roast stall at the Tillingham flower show.

Tillingham’s a small village, ten kilometers or so from Maldon, in the part of Essex known as the “Dengie Hundred”. The flower show’s a country show type of event, which is held in the village every year. Although my grandmother lived there when she was a little girl, i don’t think i’ve ever even been to Tillingham before - and i’ve certainly never been to the flower show.

Tax Time Again

The 30th of June is the last day of the financial year in Australia - so everyone will be either busily trying to sort out their tax return, or busily trying to put off sorting it out. I’m pleased to say that mine’s already lodged!

I managed to do it in record time this year - thanks to the miracle of the internet. And thanks to the fact that, for the first time in a few years, i didn’t have any periods of self-employment during the last tax year - which simplifies matters a bit. This year, too, for the first time in a couple of decades, as far as i remember, i should be getting a bit of tax back - which will be nice! … Read more »
