Snap and Scribble

It’s been eight months since i wrote my last blog post, which is a long time between posts – and i can’t say it’s really gone that fast. I haven’t written since i got back from Australia last year – partly because nothing’s been happening in my life that’s inspired me to write about it. But i guess it’s also partly because, these days, i post status updates on Facebook whenever i’ve got anything worth commenting on – and often when i haven’t, too!

“So, what’s happened in the last eight months then?” i hear you ask. Not very much at all, i’m afraid. I’ve been to London a few times and Brighton a couple of times, and i went to Bath a couple of months ago for my cousin Simon’s funeral. But that’s about it.

The rest of the time, i’ve been stuck in Maldon going slowly mad. I’ve done a bit of walking and i’ve been swimming most days for the last month or so. I’ve been going to the gym a couple of times a week since just after i got back from Australia.

I’m still building web sites for a living – business has been slow, but just about sustainable. I did 6 days work for Time Out magazine a couple of weeks ago – travelling to London and back every day. That was good, despite the two hours travelling each way. It was nice working with other people for a change – and in an office environment, rather than struggling to work at home, in the cramped space that’s available to me. It felt like i had a proper job for the first time since i left Maningrida – but unfortunately it was only for six days.

I’m planning on another trip to Australia in late September. I’ve booked in to a web conference in Sydney on the 9th and 10th of October. I may try and spend a bit longer in Australia this year than i did last time.

Mum hasn’t been too good lately – she’s had severe lower back pain and couldn’t get out of bed on her own. She also fell over a few times, from the medication the quacks gave her for the pain. But she seems to be a lot better now and hopefully she’ll be ok by the time i go to Australia. Anyway, there’s plenty of other family around to look after her while i’m not here.

So that’s about it really. It’s hardly been the most exciting year of my life so far, but somehow i seem to have survived it. I don’t know how much longer i can stand living in this country though.
